As you move through the exhibit you will gain a personal understanding of the hardships and rewards found in the coal mining industry for both coal miners and their families.

| One of the larger installations on display, this life size model depicts the early hand mining days in underground coal mining. Featured are two men hand boring, blasting and shovelling coal into a skip powered by a ‘pit pony’, one of the Clydesdale horses used for shifting coal underground.

Did you know... Did you know that the Coalface Experience features a 'Pepper's Ghost' theatre? Using the latest hologram technology, this theatre retells the stories of men who died underground in the 1954 Collinsville Mine disaster, one of Queensland’s most tragic mine disasters.

Photographer - Sue Clark, Collinsville Connect Telecentre | One of the focal points of the Coalface Experience is the role that the union has played in Collinsville and across Queensland in the coal mining industry. From the early days of underground hand mining right through to today’s big machines and fast production, the union has played a pivotal role in ensuring the rights of its members and contributing to the development of safety and working conditions in the mine.

The latest technology is used in multimedia displays which feature different aspects of coal mining, from the Pit Ponies to modern safety methods.
