Did you know...
Did you know there is no such thing as a falling star!?
Stars do not fall out of the sky. Those dramatic 'streaks of light' we see in the night sky are rocks from space. They can be the debris from the fall of a comet or sometimes random shards of rocks from asteroids. Enjoy the 20 minute presentation at Cosmos Centre and Observatory and take the opportunity to hold meteorites in your hand.

Meteorite Collection

Rocks from Space!
They contain Iron, Crystals and Glass. Our collection has all types of meteorites and people have the opportunity to hold them in their hands. They are all very different; some are very light and one meteorite in our collection is a perfect circle. The rocks fell to earth between 10,000 and 700,000 years ago, however they have been out in space for billions of years!

Did you know...
Did you know our solar system now has five dwarf planets? The Solar System is changing. New discoveries since 2006 have now identified a total of five dwarf planets and there are more just waiting to be discovered.

Human Influence on Earth

Astronomically speaking, the influence of humans is less than a blink of an eye! If we compressed time from the 'big bang' to present day into a 12 month calendar, human beings would only appear on earth in the last 5 minutes of 31 December!

Cosmos - Astronomy by Day
Did you know...
Did you know that two planets in the Solar System phase like the Moon from Planet Earth? When viewed from Earth, Venus and Mercury appear to phase like the Moon. If you want to see Planet Earth phase you have to go live on Mars!!... Why is this? Join our solar system talk to find out in Astronomy by Day.

Whatever Happened to Pluto?

No, Pluto was not 'kicked out' of the planet 'club'. A far more important event took place. The Solar System was redefined to allow the new discoveries within the Solar System to 'fit'.

While we do not have a 'collection' of planets at the Cosmos Centre and Observatory, we do have copies. Guides run a 15 minute talk on why the Solar System was redefined and they introduce visitors to the ancient and modern discoveries of the Solar System.
