| The Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum |
Did you know... Did you know the Museum is located on the historical site of the Famous Scottish Gold mine? James Nash discovered gold in the area in 1867. It was the discovery of gold that gave birth to Gympie and saved the State of Queensland from bankruptcy.

Did you know... Did you know the huge Steam driven winding engine was used for winding the cages containing miners to descend into the mineshafts, up to almost a kilometre deep? Once the miners were working, they would raise the gold bearing ore to the surface to be processed. This remarkable engine was built in Maryborough 110 years ago and is still operating!

| In the collection....The 5th Lighthorse display and slouch hat | |
James Nash and son Allen, The 5th Lighthorse display and slouch hat and Andrew Fisher three items are interwoven into history; James Nash discovered gold in the Gympie district. The Lighthorse detachment in Gympie was the first to insert the famous Emu feather into the slouch hat. Gympie’s son, who started out working in the Gold Mines in Gympie, and who became Prime Minister in 1908 authorised all Lighthorse were to wear the slouch hat with an Emu feather. James Nash’s son Allen joined the Lighthorse and went to Gallipoli and was killed in action in 1915.

Did you know... Did you know that Andrew Fisher, whose house is on display in the museum, was Australia's second Labour Prime Minister elected in 1908? He was responsible for the formation of the Australian Navy and the Commonwealth Bank. He started out in Gympie in the gold mines operating the steam driven Winding Engine.

| In the collection...Union Jack presented to the Gympie Scouts by Lord Baden-Powell. | |
This flag was flown at the famous siege of Mafeking, during the Boer War 1899-1901. This small garrison town held out against overwhelming odds to a famous victory.
It was this victory which made Lord Baden-Powell famous and combined with his astute leadership and sense of adventure, gave birth to the Scouting movement world wide.
