Did you know...
Did you know that the Museum has the largest private museum collection of Victoria Crosses in Australia? The Museum has the VC’s awarded to WO2 Keith Payne for Vietnam, Cpl George “Snowy” Howell for France, and Major Herbert James for Gallipoli.

Victoria Cross Medal Groups

The Keith Payne Medal Group consists of 23 Medals, the 3rd largest in the British Empire and the largest for an Australian. The VC was awarded for action in Vietnam in 1969.

The “Snowy” Howell Medal Group consists of 11 Medals and the VC was awarded for action in France in 1917.

Major Herbert James VC MC CdeG(Fr)
The Herbert James Medal Group consists of 9 Medals and the VC was awarded for action in Gallipoli as part of the Worcestershire Regiment in 1915.

Did you know...
Did you know that the Museum has the only Australian Cross of Valour Medal Group on display in a museum? The Museum’s Cross of Valour was awarded to Tim Britten following the Bali Bombing in 2002.

Displays of colonial and other non-military historical items

Noteworthy exhibits include a 1911 Girling Motor Vehicle (only one known still in existence), restored Cobb & Co stage coach with 4 fibreglass horses, HMAS Maryborough Bell (forms part of significant display about the old and new ships), several large paintings/murals, 1950 Doomben Cup and model of “Sydney Belle”, the ship which brought the last Kanakas to Maryborough in 1903.

Did you know...
Did you know that the Museum has extensive displays of military memorabilia, photographs, medals, and uniforms representing all battles involving Australians from the Crimean War through to present conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as many colonial exhibits?

Military History Library

The Library section on Australia’s military history is regarded as the most significant outside Canberra. This extensive library houses many forms of written historical data including over 2000 books dating from pre-Boer War and pre-Federation to the present. Hundreds of files are made up of original military documents, photographs, maps and correspondence. The Museum also holds a large collection of serviceman’s diaries. Newspapers and periodicals include The Sydney Mail from 1915 to 1918 and The Queenslander Pictorial from 1914 to 1918.
