Did you know...
Did you know that the Mercy Heritage Centre explores the lives and work of the Sisters of Mercy Brisbane Congregation, and their important initiatives in health, education and welfare since 1861?

Silver ceremonial foundation trowels from across Queensland

The Catholic Church undertook a building program in the Brisbane Archdiocese of enormous proportions. Most were designed by eminent architects of the day and were located on hill tops to create landmarks that continue to dominate Brisbane's skyline.

These 21 trowels represent geographical expansion of the Church and the important role the Catholic community played in its development – having historic and social associations.

Their elaborate decoration and aesthetic qualities also mark them as fine examples of nineteenth and early twentieth century craftsmanship.

Did you know...
Did you know that All Hallows’ Convent incorporates “Adderton” – one of Brisbane’s oldest surviving private residences, built in 1858 by John Petrie – and was the Mother House for the Sisters of Mercy in Queensland for more than 144 years?

A feature of Brisbane's ill-fated Holy Name Cathedral

Archbishop James Duhig had a grand dream to build the largest cathedral in Australia, on a site between Ann and Wickham Streets Brisbane. It was to seat 4,000 people and promised to be “one of the… most impressive buildings in the Commonwealth.”

Unfortunately, for a number of reasons, the building never progressed beyond the foundations. Our Catholic 150 exhibition will include the original plans, a commemorative booklet, and the donor’s board from the Crypt of the Holy Name Cathedral.

Did you know...
Did you know that an exhibition of Roman Catholic “treasures” will be held at the Mercy Heritage Centre this year to celebrate 150 years of the Diocese of Brisbane?

A selection of sacred vessels

Again part of the Catholic 150 exhibition, we will have on display a chalice given to Bishop James Quinn as “Bishop of Brisbane, New South Wales” and a set of cruets for “Brisbane, Moreton Bay”.

These pre-date the official declaration of the separation of Queensland from New South Wales, but after Pope Pius IX issued the Decree of the Catholic Diocese Queensland, and therefore have significant historical (and spiritual) associations.
