The centaur, with 332 people on board was torpedoed by a Japanese Submarine 23 miles east of Point Lookout, resulting in the death of 268 people. The stretcher was found washed ashore on Fraser Island two days after the sinking.

Did you know... Did you know that the Museum holds a complete copy of the death register of 8,475 inmates who died during the 80 years of operation of the Dunwich Benevolent Asylum?

Did you know... Did you know that the Museum has the history of the 1894 shipwreck of the barque 'Cambus Wallace', whose salvage operations contributed to the separation of North and South Stradbroke Island?

On 1 April 2004, the decaying remains of a large sperm whale were washed up on Main Beach of North Stradbroke Island. This skull represents one of the largest examples of the species ever collected.
