Museum and Gallery Services Queensland is the peak professional body for the public museum and gallery sector in Queensland.

Museum and Gallery Services Queensland promotes, supports and provides services to foster excellence in museums, galleries and keeping places. The Company strives to ensure a future where museums, galleries and keeping places are relevant, accessible and valued by their communities.

The organisation achieves this by providing a range of programs and services in the areas of information and advice; training and professional development; and exhibition development and touring, and by promoting the achievements of Queensland galleries and museums through activities that profile and recognise their activities.

Museum and Gallery Services Queensland is a non-profit company, limited by guarantee, and jointly owned by the Regional Galleries Association of Queensland Inc and Museums Australia Inc (Qld Branch)

M&GSQ is supported by the Queensland Government, through Arts Qld; the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, an initiative of Australian, State and Territory Governments; and the Commonwealth through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

History

Museum and Gallery Services Queensland Ltd. (M&GSQ) is a company limited by guarantee. M&GSQ was registered on 2 July 2004 and began trading on 1 October 2004.

The company is jointly owned by Museums Australia Inc. (through its Queensland Branch) and by the Regional Galleries Association of Queensland Inc.

Museum and Gallery Services Queensland grew out of a long and successful partnership between its parent organisations, MAQ and RGAQ (see profiles below).

Museums Australia

Established in 1993, Museums Australia is an advocate for museums and galleries, their collections and the people who work in them. The association is a national membership body working through a network of state and territory branches, Special Interest Groups (SIGs), the national office and an elected Council.

The Queensland branch of MA operates under Museums Australia state by-laws and has an elected Executive Committee that represents diverse sectors of the industry in Queensland. MAQ annually appoints two members of this Committee to the Board of Museum and Gallery Services Queensland.

Regional Galleries Association of Queensland

The Regional Galleries Association of Queensland was developed by the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) as a professional advisory and advocacy body to support and service the needs of the state’s regional and public gallery network. The RGAQ was supported by the LGAQ from 1986-1996.

RGAQ operates under Queensland legislation and has an elected management committee that represents regional and public galleries in Queensland. RGAQ annually appoints two members of this Committee to the Board of Museum and Gallery Services Queensland.
