PROJECTS – ORGANISATIONS VOLUNTEER RUN
Ipswich Historical Society Inc.
Interactive Touchscreen WWI Ipswich War Stories
This project involved the purchase and installation of an interactive kiosk to display stories of Ipswich WW1 servicemen. A Department of Veterans Affairs grant was obtained to pay for the kiosk.
The interactive kiosk expands information about the people named on three Ipswich WW1 honour boards displayed in an Anzac Centenary Spirit of Service funded display.
An aim of the project was to take the Society into the digital age and to engage younger audiences by creating new opportunities for volunteers and visitors. Through providing digital literacy training to volunteers and seeking grants for digital products and equipment, they have up-skilled their members, encouraging them to attend workshops on how best to share stories and learn effective research techniques from WW1 historians and other like community organisations.
BEMAC funding was received for a related video project. Information technology experts developed content, researched by the project officers into a suitable format for the kiosk, and ongoing research will contribute more content over time. For example, information about servicemen who returned to civilian life is now being researched in conjunction with veterans’ organisations and families still residing in the Ipswich area.
